On May 1, Deana L. Porterfield, M.A., joined Azusa Pacific Online University (APOU) as executive vice president. Transitioning within the Azusa Pacific System, Porterfield most recently served as the senior vice president for people and organizational development at Azusa Pacific University.
“What excites me most about being at APOU is the ability to take the mission of the Azusa Pacific System global,” Porterfield said. “As an APU alumni and in working with Azusa Pacific over the past 24 years, it’s motivating to see the life-changing impact the university had on me as a student still happening today. I’ve spoken with several APOU students about their experience, and even though it’s delivered differently, it’s still exactly what I knew my experience to be. It challenges students academically, encourages them spiritually, and calls them to be difference makers.”
Porterfield said she hopes to bring to APOU a support of the mission and focus to the university goals in partnership with Chief Executive Officer John Reynolds and the administrative team. She also looks forward to bringing her experience and energy to advance the work of APOU. Based on her strengths and God-given gifts, she said she hopes to bring a new perspective to evaluating university processes and to continue improving support for students.
In her new role at APOU, Porterfield will provide organizational leadership to advance the values, ethos, and culture of APOU, and strategic vision for enrollment and retention efforts. She will also serve as acting CEO in the traveling absence of Reynolds.
“With 24 years of experience in Christian higher education, Deana Porterfield is one of the leading executives in our industry with new thinking about organizational culture, design, and enrollment,” Reynolds said. “I’m so excited that she has chosen to change the world for tomorrow by being with APOU today.”
In her previous role as senior vice president for people and organizational development, Porterfield provided leadership for the implementation of all human resources and organizational development initiatives at APU. She previously served as APU’s chief of staff and, prior to that, vice president of enrollment management.
Porterfield earned a B.A. in music education and M.A. in organizational management from APU. She is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in organizational leadership from the University of La Verne. She lives in Upland, California, with her husband and two daughters.
