Our Legacy

Azusa Pacific University was established in 1899 as the Training School for Christian Workers, the first Bible college on the West Coast geared toward training students for ministry and service. After mergers with three Southern California colleges, the university has resided in the city of Azusa since 1949.

The earliest declaration of the Azusa Pacific University system motto, God First was originally adopted in the early part of the 20th century to reflect the desire and commitment that this institution remains spiritually alive and vitally Christian. The foundational proclamation, God First, continues to be central to sustaining the identity, mission, and purpose of the APU system.

Led by President Jon R. Wallace, DBA, APU currently offers 53 undergraduate majors, 37 master’s degrees, 21 credentials, seven doctoral programs, and five certificates to a total enrollment of more than 9,200 students on campus, online, and at seven regional centers throughout Southern California. Visit APU’s website to read more about its history.

As part of the next big step in its 113-year history, APU launched the Azusa Pacific Online University (APOU) in September 2010 in response to the growing demographic of students who aspire to further their education in an exclusively online format. APU is the first Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) school to launch a fully independent online branch for traditional age students and adult learners. Under the leadership of John C. Reynolds, CEO, APOU started its first session of learners in June 2011. Since its launch, APOU has added three associate’s degrees, a Pre-Nursing Health Science Certificate, and one bachelor’s degree program with anticipation to add more programs in 2012.

From a student:
"APOU has engaged me in some really wonderful, individualized ways. My life coach, the instructors, the dialogue with other learners - it's a full engagement on many levels."
